In this study, the change in the physical, chemical, microstructural, and rheological properties of a road bitumen modified with reactive terpolymer (Elvaloy®RET) was investigated. For this purpose, four different Elvaloy®RET percentages (0%, 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.2% by wt.) were mixed with B 160/220 bitumen. Firstly, the obtained samples were subjected to a short and long-term aging process using a rotating thin-film oven test and pressurized aging vessel, respectively. Then, the engineering characteristics of the samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and conventional and Superpave bitumen tests. The results showed that Elvaloy®RET reacted with the main macromolecular groups in the bitumen, and that the modified bitumens behaved as a homogenous single phase structure as a result of this reaction. Conventional tests showed that Elvaloy®RET-modified bitumens were much harder than pure bitumen and had better aging resistance. Furthermore, the penetration classes of these bitumens changed and their temperature sensitivities decreased significantly. Rheological tests showed that the Elvaloy®RET additive increased the resistance of the bitumen against fatigue cracking and particularly permanent deformation. Moreover, the high temperature performance class of the bitumen also increased. However, parallel to the hardening of the bitumen, a reduction in its resistance to cracking at low temperature was observed.

It has been confirmed that polyphosphoric acid (PPA) can significantly improve the high-temperature resistance, storage stability, and aging resistance of asphalt. The low price of PPA is conducive to the development of modified asphalt with high performance and excellent economy, suggesting its great application prospects. At present, there is little research on the role of PPA in delaying the aging process of PPA-modified asphalt, and a consensus has not yet been reached. Therefore, PPA-modified asphalt with different blending amounts (0 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.8 wt%, and 1.2 wt%) was prepared in this study. On the basis of variable performance, the role of PPA in the short-term antiaging process of asphalt is analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of PPA-modified asphalt before and after aging, combined with the analysis of the change in components. The results showed that after PPA addition, the high-temperature resistance and the thermal stability of asphalt were improved and the temperature sensitivity was weakened. Both curves of ductility and G ∗ indicate the potential saturation effect of PPA addition; together with infrared spectroscopy, we proved that there are both chemical reactions and physical mixing in the PPA-modified asphalt. The component fractions show that PPA will cause the asphalt to transform from sol to gel and the main function of PPA in retarding asphalt aging is the dispersion of the agglomerates of asphaltene micelles by PPA.

Öz: Bu çalışmada, reaktif terpolimer (RET) katkılı sıcak karışım asfalt kaplamaların su etkilerine karşı direnci üzerinde reaktif terpolimer (RET) katkısının etkileri araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla, penetrasyon sınıfı B 100/150 olan saf asfalta ağırlıkça %0,5; %0,75 ve %1 oranlarında RET (Elvaloy 4170) eklenerek modifiye asfaltlar hazırlanmıştır. Modifiye asfaltların fiziksel özellikleri penetrasyon, yumuşama noktası ve düktilite deneyleri ile, işlenebilirlik özellikleri ise dönel viskozimetre (RV) deneyi ile belirlenmiştir. Daha sonra, karışım tasarımı için agrega ve saf asfalt kullanılarak Marshall yöntemine göre karışımın optimum asfalt içeriği belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen bu oran sabit tutularak saf ve modifiye asfaltlar ile sıcak karışım numuneleri hazırlanmıştır. Hazırlanmış olan saf ve RET katkılı modifiye karışım numuneleri Marshall stabilitesi, kalıcı Marshall stabilitesi (RMS) ve dolaylı çekme mukavemeti (ITS) deneylerine maruz bırakılmıştır. Asfalt test sonuçlarına göre, RET katkısı ile modifiye bağlayıcıların sertliğinin ve karıştırma-sıkıştırma sıcaklıklarının arttığı görülmüştür. Karışım sonuçlarına göre, özellikle %0,75 katkılı karışımların Marshall stabilitesi, RMS ve dolaylı çekme mukavemeti oranı (ITSR) değerlerinin önemli artışlar göstermesi sebebiyle yol kaplamalarının suya karşı hassasiyeti üzerinde RET katkısının iyileştirici bir etki gösterdiği görülmüştür.
