Th e study evaluates the associations of the farm herd size (HERD), the milk yield (MY, kg/cow per year), and cows per worker (CW) with the production, reproduction, and economic traits in 60 commercial dairy herds (34 633 cows) in the Czech Republic. Each parameter was split into 3 groups. Th e largest herds (≥ 750 cows) had the highest profi tability of costs without subsidies (−3.8 ± 4.3%), the lowest cost for roughages (1.2 CZK/L milk), and the lowest cost for breeding operations (0.17 CZK/L milk), but the highest costs for the cereal grains and concentrates (2.4 CZK/L milk). Herds with the lowest MY (≤ 7 499) had the lowest profi tability of costs without subsidies (−15.8 ± 3.93%), the highest total costs (9.27 CZK/L milk), the highest labour costs (1.6 CZK/L milk), and the highest cow depreciation costs (0.97 CZK/L milk). Herds with the lowest CW (≤ 39) had the highest mean labour costs (1.51 CZK/L milk) and the highest costs for breeding operations (0.22 CZK/L milk). Herds with the highest CW (≥ 60) and the lowest CW (≤ 39) also diff ered in the total feed costs (4.1 vs. 3.73 CZK/L milk) and the costs of cereals and concentrates (2.34 vs. 1.96 CZK/L milk). Th e increasing herd size tended to be accompanied by higher milk yields and the overall effi ciency.

RESUMOObjetivou-se estimar alguns indicadores econômicos de fazendas leiteiras com alto volume de produção diária, em regime de confinamento total. Pretendeu-se, ainda, identificar os componentes que exercem maior influência sobre o custo operacional efetivo. Foram utilizados os dados de três sistemas de produção de leite, com vacas puras de origem da raça holandesa. Utilizou-se a metodologia do custo total e custo operacional na análise de rentabilidade. Os três sistemas de produção, por apresentarem margem bruta, líquida e resultado negativos, estão se descapitalizando e se endividando, pois as receitas auferidas não foram suficientes para pagar sequer as despesas operacionais efetivas. Os itens componentes do custo operacional efetivo que exerceram maior "impacto" em relação ao custo operacional efetivo foram, em ordem decrescente, a alimentação, cria e recria, mão-de-obra, despesas diversas, sanidade, energia, ordenha, reprodução, aluguel de máquinas, BST e impostos. ECONOMIC INDICATORS OF TOTAL CONFINEMENT DAIRY PRODUCTION SYSTEMS WITH HIGH DAILY PRODUCTION ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to estimate some economic indicators of dairy farms with high daily production volume, under a total confinement system. We also intended to identify the components that most affected the effective operational cost. The data of three milk production systems with pure Holstein cows were used. The total and operational cost methodology was used for the profitability analysis. All three production systems present negative gross and net margin, therefore, they are undergoing undercapitalization and accumulating debt, because the revenues earned are not enough to pay, at least, the effective operating expenses. The component items of the effective operational cost that had higher impact in relation to the effective operational cost were, in decreasing order, feeding, rearing and fattening, labor, miscellaneous expenditure, sanitation, energy, milking, reproduction, machine rental, BST and taxes.

Low-cost feeding-behavior sensors will soon be available for commercial use in dairy farms. The aim of this study was to develop a feed intake model for the individual dairy cow that includes feeding behavior. In a research farm, the individual cows' voluntary feed intake and feeding behavior were monitored at every meal. A feed intake model was developed based on data that exist in commercial modern farms: 'BW,' 'milk yield' and 'days in milking' parameters were applied in this study. At the individual cow level, eating velocity seemed to be correlated with feed intake ( R 2 = 0.93 to 0.94). The eating velocity coefficient varied among individuals, ranging from 150 to 230 g/min per cow. The contribution of feeding behavior (0.28) to the dry matter intake (DMI) model was higher than the contribution of BW (0.20), similar to the contribution of fat-corrected milk (FCM)/BW (0.29) and not as large as the contribution of FCM (0.49). Incorporating feeding behavior into the DMI model improved its accuracy by 1.3 (38%) kg/cow per day. The model is ready to be implemented in commercial farms as soon as companies introduce low-cost feeding-behavior sensors on commercial level.Keywords: individual cow, eating speed sensor, precision livestock farming ImplicationsFeed is the greatest expense in milk production.
