This study aims to comprehensively investigate the rejuvenation efficiency of various self-developed compound rejuvenators on the physical, mechanical, and aging properties of aged bitumen, asphalt mortar, and mixture. The results revealed that the restoration capacity of vacuum distilled-oil rejuvenators on high-and-low temperature performance-grade of aged bitumen is more significant. In contrast, an aromatic-oil based rejuvenator is good at enhancing low-temperature grade and aging resistance. Moreover, the temperature and time of the curing conditions for mixing recycling of asphalt mixture were optimized as 150 °C and 120 min. Furthermore, the sufficient anti-rutting, structural stability, and moisture resistance of recycled asphalt mixture affirmed the rejuvenation efficiency of compound rejuvenators.

The potential of the bio-oil from the co-pyrolysis of poplar wood and waste tire rubber to revitalize severely aged bitumen was examined by shifting the balance of aromatics and ketones in the bio-oil. Laboratory experiments were performed to compare the revitalization efficiency of bio-oils from the pyrolysis of poplar wood and co-pyrolysis of wood and waste tire rubber. Furthermore, the chemical compositions of the bio-oils from both processes were studied using gas chromatography−mass spectrometry to distinguish how each bio-oil revitalized severely aged bitumen. The results showed that the wood pyrolysis bio-oil had high phenol and ketone relative contents but very low aromatic and alkane relative contents. In contrast, significant relative amounts (19.18%) of aromatics and alkanes and a lower ketone relative content (0.95%) were found in the co-pyrolysis bio-oil. The rheological characterization of aged bitumen rejuvenated with both bio-oils showed that the co-pyrolysis bio-oil was much more effective than the wood pyrolysis bio-oil, which was evidenced by a higher crossover modulus and frequency as well as lower shear thinning in the aged bitumen rejuvenated by the co-pyrolysis bio-oil. These results prove that the co-pyrolysis bio-oil is a potential asphalt rejuvenator.

The objective of this paper is to provide information from multiple perspectives on the current state of the practice with regard to using recycled materials and recycling agents (RAs) in asphalt concrete mixtures. This information was collected through a survey of U.S. transportation agencies and RA suppliers combined with a search of RA-related specifications and pilot projects previously constructed. Moreover, a case study describing the Virginia Department of Transportation’s experience with RAs provides a tangible example of how at least one agency is approaching the potential implementation of these technologies. This practice review was achieved by documenting the experience, lessons learned, and best practices of multiple asphalt experienced contractors and asphalt binder suppliers in the Virginia area. This paper follows a similar survey conducted in 2014 as part of NCHRP 09-58 and provides a second look at the use of RAs across North America. Not all state departments of transportation have experience with using RAs. Factors preventing the use of RAs included specification limitations, lack of expertise in processing recycled materials, supporting data, and negative prior experiences. Developing a performance-based testing framework is mandatory for the successful use of RAs. In general, good and frequent communication with the RA supplier is critical and necessary during the planning stages, the production of mixtures, and the continuous quality control by the supplier to resolve issues when they arise. Finally, a strong quality control and quality assurance-testing program should be implemented to ensure that materials meet the properties needed to produce a good-performing mixture.
