Modification of bitumen has been used to improve the properties of bitumen and bituminous mixes to mitigate the problems of bitumen at extreme and quiescent conditions. It also provides better bitumen at extreme temperatures as well as saving construction cost. In this study, polycarbonate from disposed compact discs was used as modifier for bitumen with the aim of improving its consistency properties. To establish the presence of polycarbonate in the recycled compact discs, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis was conducted on the waste compact discs. The FTIR results when compared with Infrared Spectroscopy Absorption Table (ISAT), revealed transmittance peaks described by the wave numbers 764-2967cm-1 (C-H), 1770cm-1 (C=O), 1599cm-1 (C=C), 1502cm-1 (C-C) and 1010-1020cm-1 (C-O-C). These peaks confirmed the compact discs as predominantly made up of polycarbonate. Comparative FTIR analysis carried out on the pure and modified bitumen revealed that there is appearance of additional new peaks with wave numbers 2371-2091cm-1 for C-H aromatic bending, 848-2110cm-1 for C=C aromatic bending and 1685-1700cm-1 for C-C aromatic stretching in the spectra of polycarbonate modified bitumen samples, indicating that the polycarbonate has undergone chemical interactions with the bitumen. Such interaction usually results in changes to the molecular structure of the bitumen. Also, comparative analysis carried out on some properties of pure and modified bitumen showed that the modifier decreases the penetration and ductility of bitumen but increases its specific gravity and softening point. These performance evaluation results indicate the ability of polycarbonate in improving the temperature susceptibility and rutting resistance of bitumen.

This study aims to reduce the brittle point temperature of asphalt binders and improve the low-temperature mechanical properties of mixtures by developing a brittle-resistant asphalt mixture preparation technology for use in cold regions. The SBS wet-modified asphalt was combined with the melted star-shaped SBS modifier through a dry method. During mixing and transportation, the high-temperature effect helped form a secondary cross-linking effect with part of the original SBS-modified asphalt. The rest was evenly dispersed in the form of tough fillers, effectively avoiding the segregation and high viscosity issues caused by the conventional high-dosage wet-modified SBS asphalt. Tests were conducted on the brittle point temperature of asphalt binders, oil–aggregate interface adhesion grade, high- and low-temperature rheological properties of asphalt binders and the high- and low-temperature performances of the mixture to analyse the scientific nature of the developed preparation technology. Results show that compared with the conventional wet-modified SBS asphalt, the brittle-resistant SBS-modified asphalt prepared based on the wet–dry method has a reduced brittle point temperature by nearly 6.6°C, maintains an adhesion grade of 5 at the oil-aggregate interface. Moreover, the m value increases by approximately 1.3 times, the low-temperature bending strain of the mixture increases by approximately 70%, and the low-temperature bending strength is enhanced by approximately 60%. These results demonstrate that the proposed brittle-resistant SBS-modified asphalt preparation technology significantly improves the low-temperature performance of the mixture whilst ensuring mixing quality, which is crucial for enhancing the service performance of asphalt pavements in cold regions.

A full understanding of bitumen fatigue cracking behavior is extremely important as this phenomenon has a considerable influence on bituminous pavement performance. The current framework for assessing this asphalt binder property is inconsistent in ranking bitumen fatigue performance in terms of the failure definition and damage characteristic curve (DCC) analysis. This study used four different types of asphalt binders: neat asphalt (NA), self-healing thermoplastic polyurethane (STP)-modified bitumen, self-healing poly (dimethyl siloxane) crosslinked with urea bond (IPA1w)-modified bitumen, and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)-modified bitumen (SBSB). All the bitumens were subjected to short-term and long-term aging, and they were also tested by utilizing the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test and the simplified viscoelastic continuum damage (S-VECD) model. LAS and S-VECD procedures were used to apply the newly proposed and current frameworks in order to analyze bitumen performance. The current framework showed that the bitumens that used a higher number of loading cycles (N) to reach their failure points (Nf) failed to exhibit greater fatigue performances in terms of DCC analysis. The developed framework (mainly based on the damage intensity [S] instead of N) was used to solve the inconsistency between the failure definition and DCC assessment in ranking bitumen performance. Additionally, the current framework (failure criterion) presented two R2 values below 0.1, but the developed framework (failure criterion) showed that all R2 values were greater than 0.9. The developed framework represents a turning point because, for the first time, this type of procedure is mainly being based on S instead of N. Although further tests are needed to confirm its efficiency, it eliminates the inconsistency between the failure definition and DCC assessment.
