Evaluation of a latex test for rotavirus detection

Abstract: A latex agglutination (LA) test (Slidex Rota-Kit; bioMérieux, Marcy-l'Etoile, France) was a rapid, easily used method for detecting rotavirus (RV) in pediatric fecal specimens. With 45 RV-positive and 50 RV-negative diarrhea specimens, the sensitivity of the LA test was 82%, and the specificity was 100%. Six other specimens produced indeterminate results. The frequency of positive LA tests appeared to be proportional to the concentration of virions in the stool.

“…However, 12 specimens positive by the Enzygnost test only and 3 specimens positive by the Rotalex test only could not be confirmed positive by EM [38]. In the same way Slidex Rota-Kit were found to be 82% sensitive and 100% specific [39].…”

“…Several rapid tests have been evaluated and showed the ranges of 54-82.9% sensitivity and 73.3-100% specificity. [12][13][14][15][16] The performance of those rapid tests indicated that the tests could only be used for screening but not for confirmation tests. Therefore, a high specific and sensitive test is mostly needed for confirmation of the rotavirus infection.…”
