Evaluation of a Low Cost Hand Held Unit with GNSS Raw Data Capability and Comparison with an Android Smartphone

Abstract: A newly available portable unit with GNSS raw data recording capability is assessed to determine static and kinematic position accuracy in various environments. This unit is the GPSMap 66, introduced by Garmin in early September. It is all-weather and robust for field use, and comes with a helix antenna. The high sensitivity chipset is capable of acquiring and tracking signals in highly attenuated environments. It can track single frequency GPS, GPS + GLONASS or GPS + Galileo and record code, Doppler and carri… Show more

“…Smartphone hardware limitations, such as the crowded PCB (printed circuit board) space of the smartphone, the thermal noise generated during operation, and the linearly polarized antenna, are detrimental to the positioning results. The application of external antennas is one commonly used method to improve data quality and positioning accuracy [33].…”

“…Many studies have already been done regarding positioning solutions [8,9], considering GPS/GNSS chipset, and a European task force has been activated in recent years (https://www.gsa.europa.eu/gnssraw-measurements-task-force).…”

“…The release of GNSS measurements makes it possible to use proprietary calculation algorithms adapted to the limitations of the equipment and to field conditions of positioning. It also provides an opportunity to analyse the acquired GNSS observations outside the recording device, using external software [1], [2].…”
