Evaluation of a Metal Artifacts Reduction Algorithm Applied to Postinterventional Flat Panel Detector CT Imaging

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:Flat panel detector CT images are degraded by streak artifacts caused by radiodense implanted materials such as coils or clips. A new metal artifacts reduction prototype algorithm has been used to minimize these artifacts. The application of this new metal artifacts reduction algorithm was evaluated for flat panel detector CT imaging performed in a routine clinical setting.

“…16 The main difference is a higher dimension of the matrix used for the reconstruction of the C-arm CT volume (512 3 compared with 256 3 ), resulting in a potentially higher resolution of the obtained images with relatively smaller voxel sizes for the same FOV. Compared with the currently available normal-resolution C-arm CT images, the quality of the postprocessing images was further improved, allowing better differentiation among the stent, coils, and contrast dye.…”

“… 4–7 Since metal artifacts strongly limit the diagnostic value of follow-up studies after clipping or coiling, and also in other fields of radiology, 8 9 the introduction of algorithms for metal artifact reduction (MAR) was an important step forward in providing images of diagnostic value in patients with metallic implants. 10 11 …”

“…These algorithms may be very useful when coils or clipping are already present before the stent deployment (recanalized aneurysms). 6,14,22 However, our results reflect the regular clinical practice because these algorithms are only available in few centers with angiographic suites optimized to clinical research. Finally, the proportion of FDS brands used for the treatment of the patients was not evenly distributed.…”

“…Since its early de-velopment, it has shown its potential to depict intraprocedural bleeding 12 and also to provide accurate imaging of endovascular implants. 13,14 The potential of FPV-CTA has been shown for the accurate visualization of intracranial stents (laser-cut 5,15,16 as well as braided stents 7 ). It helps to see precisely the struts of the stent and may allow the depiction of a kinking, twisting, or stent misopening.…”
