Microemulsion gels were synthetized from macadamia, linseed, olive, walnut, rapeseed, sesame, and coconut oils and frying oil made from sunflower, palm, and rapeseed oils. The gels were similar as polyacrylamide–based gels with exception of replacing dodecyl sulfate with vegetable oils. The gels were modified with celluloses, cotton, or lignin to make the emulsions sustainable for water purification. They were used to compare sorption properties when they were used as solid‐phase adsorbents in isolation of steroids from water. Hydrophobicity features of the gels were compared by detecting adsorption and extraction efficiency of nonpolar androstenedione, testosterone, and progesterone, which exist in wastewater and drinking water. Quantification was done with partial filling–micellar electrokinetic chromatography with 29.5 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate–3.4 mM sodium taurocholate as the micelle and 20 mM ammonium acetate (pH 9.68) as the electrolyte. UV‐detection was used. Methanol was the best eluent for extraction of steroids from gels. The highest recoveries were from frying oil and rapeseed oil gels modified with celluloses. They also possessed the best floating properties on water surface. Lignin modified gels were too hydrophilic, when in touch with water they filled up with water. They also had the lowest capacity.

The aim of this study was to prepare pure trans-resveratrol nanoparticles without additives (surfactants, polymers, and sugars) using a supercritical antisolvent (SAS) process with alcohol (methanol or ethanol) and dichloromethane mixtures. In addition, in order to investigate the effect of particle size on the dissolution and oral bioavailability of the trans-resveratrol, two microparticles with different sizes (1.94 µm and 18.75 µm) were prepared using two different milling processes, and compared to trans-resveratrol nanoparticles prepared by the SAS process. The solid-state properties of pure trans-resveratrol particles were characterized. By increasing the percentage of dichloromethane in the solvent mixtures, the mean particle size of trans-resveratrol was decreased, whereas its specific surface area was increased. The particle size could thus be controlled by solvent composition. Trans-resveratrol nanoparticle with a mean particle size of 0.17 µm was prepared by the SAS process using the ethanol/dichloromethane mixture at a ratio of 25/75 (w/w). The in vitro dissolution rate of trans-resveratrol in fasted state-simulated gastric fluid was significantly improved by the reduction of particle size, resulting in enhanced oral bioavailability in rats. The absolute bioavailability of trans-resveratrol nanoparticles was 25.2%. The maximum plasma concentration values were well correlated with the in vitro dissolution rate. These findings clearly indicate that the oral bioavailability of trans-resveratrol can be enhanced by preparing pure trans-resveratrol nanoparticles without additives (surfactants, polymers, and sugars) by the SAS process. These pure trans-resveratrol nanoparticles can be applied as an active ingredient for the development of health supplements, pharmaceutical products, and cosmetic products.

Transdermal delivery systems are emerging platforms for the delivery of donepezil hydrochloride (DH) for treating Alzheimer's disease. The primary aim of this study was to develop polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl pyrrolidone blended hydrogels and to evaluate their feasibility for delivering DH via a transdermal route. Physicochemical properties, such as gel fraction (%), swelling ratio (%), weight loss (%), mechanical strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of the prepared hydrogels were evaluated. Furthermore, in vitro skin permeation and in vivo pharmacokinetic studies were performed. With an increased concentration of propylene glycol (PG), the gel fraction (%), maximum strength, and elongation at break decreased. However, the swelling ratio (%) and weight loss (%) of hydrogels increased with increased PG content. The 26% PG-hydrogel was superior, with an enhancement ratio of 12.9 (*** p < 0.001). In addition, the 11% PG-hydrogel and 1% PG-hydrogel exhibited an enhancement ratio 6.30-fold (*** p < 0.001) and 2.85-fold (* p < 0.05) higher than that exhibited by control, respectively, indicating a promising effect of PG on skin permeation. In addition, in vivo pharmacokinetic studies on hairless rats assessed the expediency for transdermal delivery of DH. The transdermal delivery of optimized hydrogel-patches with two different doses of DH revealed that the maximum plasma concentration and area under the curve were dose dependent, and the time to reach the maximum concentration was 8 h. Thus, optimized hydrogels have the potential to enhance the transdermal delivery of DH and could be a novel clinical approach.
