“…However, the BlandAltman plots for both probes revealed high limits of agreement and demonstrated substantial overestimation of low SO 2 and underestimation at high SO 2 . In a clinical investigation of a PediaSat system in neonates and paediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery, Ranucci et al 17 reported a mean bias close to zero and an accep- 12 were only close to 50%, which may explain the considerable disagreement with the presented findings.…”

“…In the past, several related systems have been investigated, and the most recent studies 8,[10][11][12][13]17 show similar variations in the SvO 2 range of interest. In a previous investigation, 11 we reported on a three-light, reference, wavelength-based oximetry catheter system demonstrating only a poor agreement between fibre-optically measured SO 2 and S CO-OX O 2 values.…”

“…Such considerations probably played a role in the current study of continuous venous oximetry after pediatric cardiac surgery by Crowley et al 3 They and others 7,8 have evaluated the technology in patients and animal models previously, albeit with somewhat variable results concerning accuracy and validity, especially at extremes of physiology where the technology may not be as reliable. 9 Their current observational study used commercially available, percutaneously placed pediatric oximetric venous catheters positioned in the SVC to measure SCVO 2 continuously during and after major heart surgery in children without any residual postrepair shunt lesions.…”
