Evaluation of a Veterinary Glucometer for Use in Horses

Abstract: Background: Glucose assessment and regulation are important factors in the treatment of hospitalized horses and foals. Hypothesis/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare glucose measurement by a veterinary glucometer, adjusted by code for use in horses and foals, to a reference chemistry analyzer. It was hypothesized that the veterinary glucometer and reference analyzer would yield similar results and that interpretation of glucose values obtained from a veterinary glucometer would result in clini… Show more

“…Lactate concentrations <0.8 mmol/L read as “low” and were assigned a value of 0.7 mmol/L for statistical analysis. Blood glucose concentration was measured on whole blood within 5 minutes of blood collection using a handheld blood glucose monitoring system that has been validated in horses . All lactate and glucose concentrations were determined in duplicate and averaged for statistical analysis.…”

“…24,25 Urine creatinine concentration and GGT activity were measured (-24 and 24 hours) by use of an automated chemistry analyzer j with commercially available reagents and standards. Urine GGT (U/L)-to-creatinine (mmol/L) ratio was calculated.…”
