Evaluation of algorithms for wave height measurements with high frequency radar

Abstract: Ocean wave conditions impact navigation, offshore operations, recreation, fisheries, safety of life at sea and hence the economic stability of any country's maritime sector. Making accurate measurements of wave conditions will help validate wave models and will help with forecasts of the wave conditions over the next few days. The United States has put forth "A National Operational Wave Observation Plan" to meet this need. It has called for 133 wave measurements in the coastal zone. High Frequency radar system… Show more

“…Today, HFr systems are used worldwide [62,63] as efficient instruments for simultaneously measuring and monitoring surface currents [23][24][25]64] and wave parameters [9,[65][66][67][68][69]. In this study, we analyzed a fifty-six-month long wave-data time series, recorded by Sea-Sonde HFr systems installed in the GoN, with a special focus on sea storms.…”

“…Roarty et al [9,10] examined several wave-inducing factors to improving wave measurements. Zhou et al [11,12,13,14] proposed an inverse method by using the unsaturated property of the first-order Bragg spectral power in 2015. Tian [15,16,17] estimated wave height from dualfrequency radar data in 2017.…”
