Evaluation of anti-ulcer activity of the leaf extract of Osyris quadripartita Decne. (Santalaceae) in rats

Abstract: Osyris quadripartita (OQ) Salzm. ex Decne. has been used to treat peptic ulcer disease in Ethiopian folk medicine, but its efficacy has not been validated. The present study was therefore carried out to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity of 80% methanol leaf extract of OQ in rats. The effect of OQ extract on gastric ulcer in rats in pylorus ligation-induced and ethanol-induced models was studied using single dosing (100, 200, 400 mg/kg) and repeated dosing (200 mg/kg for 10 and 20 days) approaches. Ranitidine (5… Show more

“…The total acidity value was higher in the group A (negative control) and group B (positive control) when compared to group C (standard drug control) and group D (extract treated) (P value < 0.05) as shown in Figure 3 and Table III. Our fi ndings were in accordance with all of the previous studies which have been performed to measure the diff erence between pH and total acidity of animals of disease and extract treated groups (Abebaw et al 2017, Chatterjee et al 2012, Pradhan et al 2013.…”

“…It was also reported that intragastric administration of absolute ethanol in rats increases the levels of VEGF, [22,23] TNF α, and MDA in gastric tissue homogenates. [24,25] Pretreatment of rats with graded doses of the ethanol stem bark extract of B. dalzielii H provided cytoprotection, signifi- cantly decreased (p<0.0001) gastric ulcer index, and ameliorated gastric mucosal injury by ethanol in a dose-dependent manner when compared to ethanol control. The treatment also significantly increased (p<0.001) the SOD, CAT, and TAC levels when compared with control.…”

“…ex Decne is a plant native of Africa, southwestern Europe and Asia, commonly known as wild tea and widely used in Ethiopian folk medicine. A study evaluated the antiulcer activity of 80% methanol leaf extract from O. quadripartita in Wistar albino rats, using pylorus ligation-induced and ethanol-induced models, both applying a single (100, 200, 400 mg/kg) and repeated dosing (200 mg/kg for 10 and 20 days) approaches [ 101 ]. The extract reduced gastric ulcer index in both models at 400 mg/kg dose, which is comparable to the standard drugs, ranitidine (50 mg/kg) and sucralfate (100 mg/kg).…”

“…Moreover, the study showed that the extract exerted both dose- and time-dependent antiulcer effects in both models. Additionally, the oral median lethal dose (LD 50 ) was estimated to be higher than 2000 mg/kg and where secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, tannins and saponins were detected in the extract [ 101 ].…”
