Evaluation of Back Projection Methods for Breast Tomosynthesis Image Reconstruction

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the USA. Compared to mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis is a new imaging technique that may improve the diagnostic accuracy by removing the ambiguities of overlapped tissues and providing 3D information of the breast. Tomosynthesis reconstruction algorithms generate 3D reconstructed slices from a few limited angle projection images. Among different reconstruction algorithms, back projection (BP) is considered an important foundation of quite a few r… Show more

“…To achieve highly accurate detection results, it is crucial to obtain a high-resolution, 2D image with clear target features. Currently, numerous scholars have devoted significant efforts to achieve high-quality 2D imaging by enhancing techniques, such as backprojection algorithms [ 29 ], frequency scaling algorithms [ 30 ], and holographic imaging algorithms [ 31 ]. The objective is to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and enhance image features.…”

“…This approach is rooted in the precise partitioning of the Discrete Fourier Theorem space under the projective Discrete Radon Transform, as denoted in the Discrete Fourier Theorem. To further augment image quality and move beyond the confines of conventional backprojection methods, Zhou, Lu et al [10] precede two innovative backprojection variants: the α-trimmed backprojection and the principal component analysis-based backprojection. These variants offer the promise of superior image quality, which is a critical factor in numerous tomographic applications.…”

“…In addition, it is easy to realize miniaturized or micro-focus X-ray sources. Cold cathode X-ray sources have thus become a research hotspot in the field [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
