Evaluation of bleeding on probing and gingival crevicular fluid enzyme activity for detection of periodontally active sites during supportive periodontal therapy

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the enzyme activity in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and its association with clinical parameters, especially bleeding on probing (BOP), and thus reconsider the significance and accuracy of recording BOP. A total of 184 patients who had entered supportive periodontal therapy were selected and GCF was collected from 401 sites before recording the clinical parameters, probing pocket depth (PPD), BOP, clinical attachment level, gingival index and plaque index. The enzyme activity of … Show more

“…The observation of an association between aMMP-8 levels and gingival inflammation (mSBI) in the present study could support the latter possibility. However, the literature shows that aMMP-8 concentrations increase with the severity of periodontitis and that aMMP-8 levels are directly associated with BOP and PPD [3132333435]. This conflicts with the findings of the current study.…”

“…4). In particular, larger amounts of gingival crevicular fluid can be found at sites with BOP compared with sites without BOP 22 , 23 . As a result, it could lead to even fewer numbers of total bacteria in samples from sites with BOP (Fig.…”
