Evaluation of Capiox RX25 and Quadrox-i Adult Hollow Fiber Membrane Oxygenators in a Simulated Cardiopulmonary Bypass Circuit

Abstract: The Capiox RX25 and Quadrox-i Adult oxygenators are commonly used in clinical adult cardiopulmonary bypass circuits. This study was designed to test the effectiveness of two adult oxygenators in order to evaluate gaseous microemboli (GME) trapping capability and hemodynamic performance. A simulated adult CPB circuit was used and primed with Ringer's lactate and packed red blood cells (hematocrit 25%). All trials were conducted at flow rates of 2-5 L/min (1 L/min increments) with a closed and open arterial filt… Show more

“…Other experimental studies focused exclusively on airhandling properties of current oxygenators. Qiu et al 12 ) evaluated the Capiox FX05, Wang et al 16 ) tested Capiox RX25 and the Quadrox-I, both concluded that in a simulated adult CPB circuit the oxygenators performed well. Their findings are in line with the results from a Swedish team, 17 ) who also conclude that incorporated arterial filters reduce GME activity.…”

“…Synthetic polymer membranes are often used to develop an extracorporeal circulation circuit 1,2 ; a membrane oxygenator or hemofilter serves to compensate for biogenic activity in the circuit. As membranes used in the circuit have large dimensions to perform their function effectively, blood comes in contact with membrane surfaces that do not possess endothelial-like properties, contributing to the activation of thrombogenic responses.…”

“…Synthetic polymer membranes are used in extracorporeal circulation circuit devices, such as in membrane oxygenators during cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries and in hemofilters during hemodialysis therapies. 1,2 In such cases, membranes are exposed to blood for a long time; therefore, their biocompatibility requires exploration. 3,4 Particularly, in the field of cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, foreign surfaces of extracorporeal circulation circuit Biocompatibility of a polymer-coated membrane possessing a hydrophilic bloodcontacting layer: Adsorption-related assessment devices including membrane oxygenators are coated with a biocompatible polymer coating agent consisting of an acrylate-based copolymer (ACP).…”
