Evaluation of caries risk reduction following preventive programs in orthodontic patients, using Cariogram computer model: A quasi-experimental trial

Abstract: Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of preventive strategies on caries risk reduction in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, using the Cariogram program. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, samples were selected using a convenience quota sampling technique, in a public dental school. At first, caries risk profile was determined for each subject using the Cariogram before brackets bonding. The sample size consisted of 36 patients. The intervention group (n = 18) received preventive … Show more

“…Goal‐setting was identified as a major component of the MI approach in most studies included in the meta‐analysis [10, 11]. Although the specific impact of OHGS on ECC was not evaluated in our study, numerous studies have consistently demonstrated an association between optimal OHBs, such as regular brushing and drinking fluoridated water, and their influence on the prevention of caries [12]. Furthermore, a study found that OHGS among adults was predictive of improved oral health‐related quality‐of‐life outcomes [13].…”

“…However, alternative research suggests that a minimum duration of six months is preferred for the identification of the outcomes of caries preventive measures. Therefore, the current investigation was carried out for six months, aligning with the investigation completed by Doost-Hoseini et al [ 2 ]. This study confirms that the usage of 1,450 ppm fluoridated toothpaste leads to a lowering of the high caries risk profile, as indicated by the Cariogram pie chart.…”

“…Fixed appliances foster a greater cariogenic burden surrounding orthodontic brackets and bands because they not only enhance the rate of biofilm production but also the number of acid-producing microbes within the biofilm. White spot lesions (WSLs) and demineralization of enamel will eventually occur from the acidogenic bacteria in the dental biofilm if patients are unable to maintain proper oral hygiene during orthodontic therapy [ 2 ]. Fixed appliance therapy has become an essential component of contemporary orthodontics, but it has also been linked with specific negative consequences such as periodontal damage, root resorption, caries, etc.…”
