Evaluation of Dynamic Pseudo Functions for Reservoir Simulation

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed investigation on the reliability of the dynamic pseudo functions used to up-scale flow properties in reservoir simulation. A theoretical study and a real field application are used to evaluate Kyte and Berry (1975). Stone (1991), and a new flux weighted potential (FWP) method. A derivation of Stone's method is presented and shown to use an inconsistent set of equations. Stone's analytical example was used to illustrate how pseudo relative permeabilities that exhibit non-physical … Show more

“…They can also result in a non-monotonic relative permeability curve, which may lead to numerical difficulties. Other methods including flux weighted potential (Guzman et al, 1996), and weighted relative permeability (Schlumberger, 2009) can produce adequate-looking, simulator friendly pseudos but fail to match the fine grid results (Barker and Dupouy, 1999). These methods are also based on Darcy's law.…”

“…These methods include Jacks et al (2) , Kyte and Berry (3) , Flux Weighted Potential Method (4) and Pore Volume Weighted Methods. The second type of dynamic pseudo functions is based on an average total mobility, and they are used to match coarse and fine grid pressure or potential gradients.…”

“…In order to turn finer scale problems solvable, one can apply degrees-of-freedom reduction, either by grid upscaling or homogenization processes. These procedures rely on computing material properties or functions on coarse domain partitions [5,6,7]. However, such procedures are not robust nor flexible for reservoir simulation, presenting discrepancies with high permeability contrasts [7], requiring further studies to become a mature flow simulation technique.…”
