Evaluation of Electromagnetic Pulse Shielding Performance of Carbon Fiber-Mixed Cement Paste

Abstract: This study investigated the physical properties and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) shielding performance of cement paste containing small-diameter carbon fibers to develop an EMP-shielding cement. Small-diameter carbon fibers were used as a cement admixture because the powders were approximately 100 μm in length and were visually powder-shaped. As a result of the experiment, it was indicated that ordinary Portland cement do not have shielding performance. However, cement paste with 5% carbon fibers showed effecti… Show more

“…They found that electric arc furnace oxidizing and copper slag have positive effects on the shielding effectiveness. Min and Cho (2022) [26] evaluated the shielding effectiveness of EMP shielding concrete at various levels of milled carbon content. It was reported that the greatest improvement in shielding effectiveness occurred when the milled carbon content was 5%, and the shielding effectiveness increased at increasing concrete thickness [26].…”

“…However, this increases the construction cost, while the space and construction efficiency decrease when a new room is added to the existing concrete structure. Moreover, the corrosion of welds or joints produces oxides that reduce the shielding efficacy [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…At 1 GHz, materials with high electrical conductivity, such as carbon black, carbon nanotubes, and steel fibers, can be incorporated into concrete to improve the shielding effect of the concrete structure [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. However, the mass production of these materials is high-cost and their economic efficiency is low.…”
