Numerous methods for the determination of soil sulphur (S) have been developed and tested in field conditions, but so far none of them have shown a satisfying relationship to crop yield. Therefore, these methods are not suitable to be used to evaluate the sulphur supply or to determine the sulphur fertilizer demand. In this paper a successful approach was adapted and optimized for routine analysis in soils in humid conditions. Modifications included a comparison of soil incubation with shaking, changes in the concentration of the extractant, the soil-to-extractant ratio, the time of shaking, particle size of the soil and method of detection. The best results in terms of a high reproducibility and sensitivity of the method for soils with extremely low, but also high, sulphur contents were obtained when the soil was extracted in a 1:5 ratio with 0.025 M KCl, shaken for 3 hr and then filtered. The method is suitable for ICP and IC measurement, whereby IC is preferable on low sulphur soils because of the higher detection limit. 41

The present investigation was conducted to distribute and characterization of different Sulphur (S) fractions in selected soil orders of India. Soil samples were collected from cultivated fields in different states of India, covering West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. These states belong to the soil orders Entisols, Inceptisols, and Alfisols. A total of two hundred seventy composite soil samples were collected from ten locations of each order, representing three depths: 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm, and 30-45 cm, with thrice replication. After analyzing the various sulfur fractions, the results showed that there was no distinct distribution of sulfur reported in the various locations. In Entisols soil order, non-sulphate sulfur contributes highest fraction with a mean of 2744.99 mg kg-1 while lowest contribution was found in available sulfur with a mean of 25.24 mg kg-1 of total S followed by organic sulfur (112.54 mg kg-1), adsorbed sulfur (97.79 mg kg-1). A similar pattern was observed in Inceptisols and Alfisols soil orders. Available S was positive and significantly correlated with organic Sulphur in Entisol and Inceptisol while negative correlated with remaining fraction of S. Based on the sulfur availability index, the dominant fraction of sulfur in all three soil orders was non-sulfate sulfur.

It was the objective of this study to compare the suitability of different extractants for predicting the availability of sulfur (S) in natural grassland in a sulfur response trial on three different soil types in the Inner Mongolia steppe of China. For soil analysis, seven different extractants have been employed. The inorganic SO4-S concentration was determined by ion chromatography. Additionally, in the Ca(H:P04)i extract the total soluble S was determined employing turbidimetry. Weak salt solutions (0.15% CaCI., Ca(H2PO4)2, and KH2PO4) extracted similar 721 722 X. Y. Cui et al. amounts of SO4-S. Extraclion with 0.025 M KCl provided the lowest SO4-S values.Deioni/ed water dissolved significanily more SO4-S in Ihe conlrol plots than most weak salt cxtraclaiits. The concentration of soluble organic S decreased in Ihe control plots after 1 (X) days of plant growth, indicating that the organic S pool contrihuted significantly to the S nutrition of the forage crops. Significant relalionships among the SO4-S in the soil determined in different exti'acts and crop yield, sulfur content in the forage, and total sulfur uptake were only found for the Ca(H2PO4)2 extract. In general, the correlation coefficients proved to be unsatisfactory for field experimentation.
