This study investigates the gasification behaviour of bituminous coal using different reactants of CO 2 , steam and a mixture of CO 2 and steam under entrained flow gasification conditions at temperatures of 1000 C and 1200 C with atmospheric pressure. The major gas constituents of the syngas were measured using online micro-GC with a model number Varian 490, whereas the minor pollutant gases were analysed using Kitagawa gas detection tubes. A maximum carbon conversion of 86% was achieved under steam gasification at a temperature of 1200 C compared to 74% from CO 2 gasification. The higher carbon conversion from steam gasification is due to the higher gasification reactivity than CO 2 gasification. At 1000 C, the lower heating value (LHV) from steam gasification was determined to be 60%, 70% and 80% higher than that of CO 2 gasification using the reactant concentrations of 10, 20 and 40 vol. %, respectively. Using a stoichiometric 50/50 ratio of CO 2 and steam, the yield of H 2 , CO and CH 4 were increased by 56%, 106% and 35% compared to that of pure CO 2 gasification. At 1000 C, the LHV under mixed reactant condition is close to the LHV from the pure steam gasification at 1200 C. In steam gasification, increasing the temperature by 200 C from 1000 C decreases the LHV by 17 and 10% using 10 and 20 vol.% steam. The higher heating value from steam gasification is due to the H 2 and CH 4 -rich syngas compared to CO-rich syngas in CO 2 gasification. The BET surface area of the solid char from steam gasification is about 17 and two times higher than that of CO 2 gasification at 1000 C and 1200 C, respectively.

In the present study, kitchen waste is chosen as a solid feed for producing high‐caloric valuable syngas using CO2 as a gasifying agent. Dried kitchen waste is gasified in a spouted fluidized bed reactor for syngas production. In the process, along with syngas, a significant quantity of oil (48 wt.%) and solid char residue is obtained during pyrolysis. Further, the spouted bed process is simulated in ASPEN PLUS using various reactor modules and the calculated results is validated with the experimental data. A model using the combination of continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and plug flow reactor (PFR) with recycling of gas and char fits the behaviour of spouted bed. Further, the experimental investigation of fixed and spouted bed gasification of kitchen showed that the calorific value of syngas obtained during gasification is 10.45 MJ/nm3 with 30.00 vol.% CO and 24.00 vol.% H2. Further, the effect of process parameters such as pressure, temperature, spouting gas flow rate, and feed rate of kitchen waste on overall syngas composition is evaluated using ASPEN PLUS software.

Gasification kinetics of Barapukurian coal char using carbon dioxide and steam reactants

Gasification of coal is a cost-effective and sustainable technology to produce syngas and hydrogen with integrated carbon capture and storage system. This study investigates the gasification characteristics of Barapukurian bituminous coal (BBC) char under carbon dioxide (CO2) and steam atmosphere using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA). The char was prepared through a rapid pyrolysis process in a high temperature entrained flow gasifier at a temperature of 1200 °C. TGA experiments were conducted under atmospheric pressure over 700–1200 °C. Factors affecting intrinsic gasification kinetics, such as diffusion and mass transfer limitations, were optimised before conducting TGA experiments at various temperatures. Three established kinetic models of the volumetric model (VM), grain model (GM) and random pore model (RPM) fitted well with the experimental data. The activation energy determined from CO2 gasification was 1.20–1.25 times higher than that of steam gasification, indicating a higher reactivity under steam than CO2. The order of reaction using CO2 and steam was determined to be 0.67 and 0.95 at 900 °C. Graphical abstract
