With the increasing widespread of sensor technology, new solutions for indoor positioning systems are continuously being developed and with them, new services requiring accurate positioning data have seen a great rise in popularity. In this thesis, a new design technique and deployment methodology for an indoor positioning system using neural networks is proposed to offer more flexibility and simplicity in the development of such a system which is currently very context-bound. The usage of battery-powered tags implies also that systems should not require excessive power consumption and the large number of targets to position requires a method that is not only accurate but also scalable. The proposed positioning system utilizes a small “swarm” of neural networks tasked to position targets based on distance measurements from Ultrawide Band sensors and requires shorter fingerprint collection campaigns and enables more flexibility in system deployment and alterations. Instead of relying solely on real data collected on the field for the training of neural networks, synthetic data is used for an initial training phase. Together, these propositions allow flexibility in terms of adding, removing or altering positions of reference nodes and simplifies offline deployment operations of an indoor positioning system. This thesis presents a system operating in a laboratory-workshop environment capable of good positioning accuracies and maintains robust performances in poor signal propagation.

There are many situations in which it is desirable to use a Local Positioning System (LPS), which constitutes a complete and independent unit, offers high accuracy and in addition is economical to realize. This paper describes the LPS LOSNUS (Localization of Sensor Nodes by Ultra Sound). LOSNUS is a complete and independent LPS where the same system can be used for localization and calibration. Primarily designed for locating numerous quasi-static devices, special care of system construction has taken on costly factors, especially in the construction of the infrastructure and of sensor nodes where locating can be realized with minimal additional hardware costs. LOSNUS enables a calibration process without the need of additional expensive tools and/or laborious time in order to get accurate positions of transmitters. As a result, LOSNUS delivers high locating accuracy at medium update rates, and in case of sufficient number of transmitters can also tolerate single failures in the Time of Arrival (ToA) measurement, allowing arbitrary failure modes. In this article, the system is presented starting from design, realization and algorithms of localization and calibration. Finally, new measurement results are showing the high accuracy of localization based on a discussion of the applied uncertainty description.

Location-based services (LBS) are a significant permissive technology. One of the main components in indoor LBS is the indoor positioning system (IPS). IPS utilizes many existing technologies such as radio frequency, images, acoustic signals, as well as magnetic sensors, thermal sensors, optical sensors, and other sensors that are usually installed in a mobile device. The radio frequency technologies used in IPS are WLAN, Bluetooth, Zig Bee, RFID, frequency modulation, and ultra-wideband. This paper explores studies that have combined WLAN fingerprinting and image processing to build an IPS. The studies on combined WLAN fingerprinting and image processing techniques are divided based on the methods used. The first part explains the studies that have used WLAN fingerprinting to support image positioning. The second part examines works that have used image processing to support WLAN fingerprinting positioning. Then, image processing and WLAN fingerprinting are used in combination to build IPS in the third part. A new concept is proposed at the end for the future development of indoor positioning models based on WLAN fingerprinting and supported by image processing to solve the effect of people presence around users and the user orientation problem.
