Evaluation of methods for verifying the performance of color‐measuring instruments. Part I: Repeatability

Abstract: A recent ASTM specification (ASTM E2214-02) was created to standardize the terminology and procedures used to evaluate color measuring instruments. This specification addresses the need for uniformity among the manufacturers of such instruments when quantifying the performance of their products. The scope of E2214 is necessarily large, covering the procedures required to compare instruments for a variety of metrics, all of which are important to their overall performance. In this work, we will focus on one asp… Show more

“…The short‐term repeatability is typically dE ab < 0.05 or even dE ab < 0.01 for d/8 measurements. But long‐term reproducibility and inter‐instrument agreement are generally larger: typically, dE ab < 0.3 or dE ab = 0.2–0.5, with dE ab < 0.15 for d /8 measurements . More specifically, in Table , we have summarized the reported repeatability and reproducibility for a number of widely used commercial spectrophotometers.…”

“…Assessment of the performance of the spectrophotometer used – Repeatability (short‐term), reproducibility, inter‐instrument reproducibility, and accuracy – were tested (21). Measurements were performed on the middle third of the facial surface of an extracted human central right incisor and on a ‘2M2’ shade tab.…”

“…4,5,7 For verifying the performance of Easyshade and the validity of the tooth color measurements for the exemplary color space, tests were done on repeatability, reproducibility, inter-instrument reproducibility, and accuracy. 12 Repeatability (short). Thirty measurements on identical spots of an extracted tooth and a shade tab of the 3D-Master shade guide (middle third of facial surface).…”
