Evaluation of Normal Corneas Using the Scanning-Slit Topography/Pachymetry System

Abstract: Orbscan scanning-slit topography seems to be a reliable technique for the evaluation of normal corneas not only for anterior shape and curvature but also for a real pachymetry gradient recording.

“…On the other hand, SSCT does not allow the corneal endothelium to be studied but allows anterior chamber depth, pupil size, and white-to-white measurements, 13 and it makes it possible to detect the corneal site with the minimum thickness value. 10,15 Thus, ophthalmologists can use SSCT or NCMS. Nevertheless, it must be known that SSCT and NCMS cannot be used interchangeably because of the differences observed between techniques when measuring CCT.…”

“…18 Using the Purkinje image method, the mean radius of curvature was 6.42 mm. 19 Módis et al 20 .47 mm for the same with the Pentacam. In our measurement obtained by using the Pentacam HR, the median of the anterior radius of the corneal curvature was 7.77 mm horizontally and 7.67 mm vertically; the radius of the posterior corneal curvature was 6.49 mm horizontally and 6.21 mm vertically.…”

“…The thinnest area, though rarely outside the central 2 mm, is also rarely at the geometric center of the cornea. 15,31 A conservative approach in corneal refractive surgery led the authors to use the thinnest area data provided by the Orbscan instrument since the instrument became available. This same clinically conservative approach in the authors' practice uses the lowest of three central ultrasound pachymetry measurements.…”
