Evaluation of passive avoidance learning and spatial memory in rats exposed to low levels of lead during specific periods of early brain development

Abstract: Objectives: Widespread use of heavy metal lead (Pb) for various commercial purposes has resulted in the environmental contamination caused by this metal. The studies have shown a definite relationship between low level lead exposure during early brain development and deficit in children's cognitive functions. This study investigated the passive avoidance learning and spatial learning in male rat pups exposed to lead through their mothers during specific periods of early brain development. “…PA test is used to assess memory retention deficit in rodents and was performed as per earlier method described (37). The apparatus consisted of both light and dark compartment having dimensions (25 × 25 × 25 cm) of each, illuminated with a 40W bulb and a dark chamber, separated by a guillotine door.…”

“…The passive avoidance learning test was used to assess the memory retention in all groups of rats according to the method described by Barkur and Bairy . The test determines the ability of each rat to remember an electrical foot shock delivered 2 hours prior to the memory retention test evaluation.…”

“…The passive avoidance learning test was used to assess the memory retention in all groups of rats according to the method described by Barkur and Bairy. 29 The test determines the ability of each rat to remember an electrical foot shock delivered 2 hours prior to the memory retention test evaluation. In brief, at the end of day 45, the rats were placed in the passive avoidance apparatus that consists of a wooden box (50 × 50 × 35 cm) with a larger and brightly illuminated room and a smaller (15 × 15 × 15 cm) dark compartment supported with a grid floor that is connected to an electrical shock source.…”

“…Step through latency was the time taken by rat to enter darker chamber and it was noted during its placement in apparatus for 5 minutes [23]. Poor memory was indicated by decrease in step through latency.…”
