Evaluation of patella alta using MRI measurements in adolescents

Abstract: Purpose:To determine whether or not there were any differences in the measurement techniques used by orthopedic and radiology specialists in the evaluation of magnetic resonance (MR) images for the diagnosis of patella alta in adolescents.Materials and Methods:Evaluations were performed by three orthopedic specialists (Group I) and three radiology specialists (Group II) regarding the presence of patella alta in 40 adolescents cases using the Insall–Salvati, Caton–Deschamps, Blackburne–Peel, and modified Insall… Show more

“…To determine ISR of knees, baseline sagittal MRI (IW fat-saturated TSE sequences, taken while knees were fully extended) were evaluated by two musculoskeletal fellowship trained (CS and MH) and one board-certified (AP) radiologists, with more than 3-years of experience in assessing knee MRI, who were blinded to the outcomes of subjects. The intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of moderate to almost perfect for MRI-derived ISR have been reported using weighted kappa method 16 .…”

“…Various indices have been defined for measuring the height of the patella on lateral knee radiographs (8)(9)(10)(11). These methods have both positive and negative aspects.…”

“…The IS index is the ratio of the patellar tendon length extending between the patella distal pole and the tuberositas tibia to the maximum length of the patella extending between the distal and proximal poles. 14,15 The BP index is the ratio of the perpendicular distance of the distal pole of the patella to the plateau articular surface to the length of the patellar articular surface. 14,15 The CD index is the ratio of the distance between the distal pole of the patella and the plateau anterosuperior to the length of the patellar joint surface.…”
