Evaluation of protein adsorption to diamond-like carbon (DLC) and fluorinedoped DLC films using the quartz crystal microbalance method

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate albumin adsorption to stainless steel (SUS), diamond-like carbon (DLC) and fluorinedoped DLC (F-DLC) films using the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method. Each sensor was characterized using atomic force microscopy, surface roughness and surface wettability measurements and surface free energy calculations. Adsorbed amounts of bovine serum albumin on DLC and F-DLC were significantly lower than that on SUS (p<0.05). The apparent first-order reaction rate, kobs, o… Show more

“…Finally, the highest contact angle values were obtained for the as-deposited a-C:5H, a mean value of 70 • , comparable to those observed by several authors on DLC coatings [25,[55][56][57]. In fact, 70 • has been considered the angle above which a surface is named hydrophobic, i.e., the limit between hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces [58].…”

“…Such values suggest that these surfaces are hydrophilic [74]. However, when the a-C:5H coating was deposited on Si substrates, a water contact angle of 71 • ± 3 • was obtained, comparable to those obtained by several authors on sputtered DLC coatings [21,31,[75][76][77]. Defects on the SS surface from polishing seemed the cause of this divergence: during coating growth, these "linear" features influence the final coating-surface morphology (roughness), and therefore, the wettability.…”

“…There was a clear correlation between the amount of albumin uptake and the total surface free energy; the DLC film significantly increased the total surface free energy and effectively increased the interaction with water molecules to prevent protein adsorption. 31,32 Stainless steel surgical instruments were prone to the attachment of tissue proteins and elastic prion proteins, which increased the risk of endogenous Creutzfeldt− Jakob disease during surgery. DLC coating provided a antifouling surface that prevented the adsorption of proteins and microorganisms.…”
