Evaluation of relationship between meteorological parameters and air pollutant concentrations during winter season in Elazığ, Turkey

Abstract: In recent years, due to the rapid increase in population density, building density and energy consumption, the outdoor air quality has deteriorated in the crowded urban areas of Turkey. Elaziğ city, which is located in the east Anatolia region of Turkey, is also influenced by air pollutants. In the present study, relationship between monitored air pollutant concentrations such as SO2 and the total suspended particles (TSP) data and meteorological factors such as wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, sola… Show more

“…The regression models for PM 10 , CO 8hr , O 3-1hr , and NO 2 decreased moderately with decreasing WS, temperature, and RH. On the other hand, there was a weak association between SO 2 concentrations and meteorological parameters, similar to a previous finding (Akpinar et al, 2008).…”

“…The significance level of the constant and coefficients are statistically tested using the t distribution. A generally used measure of the goodness of fit of a linear model is r 2 (Akpinar et al, 2008). PM 10 , CO 8hr , O 3-1hr , NO 2 , and SO 2 concentrations were considered to be the dependent variables, while the meteorological parameters, such as temperature, RH, and WS, were considered to be the independent and continuous variables.…”

“…These factors determine the pace of air masses movements and the potential processes of concentration and dilution of air pollutants comprised within, as a result of an air inflow from neighbouring areas, more or less polluted [1,13,15,44]. Wind is also a fundamental dispersing factor defining the spread direction of air pollutant plumes emitted from various emission sources, which leads to considerable diversity of pollution levels in the air caused by their influence.…”
