“…The increase in NH 3 sorption of H 2 SO 4 -treated biochars is in agreement with the findings of Petit et al who showed that sulfur-containing groups may be as influential as oxygen functional groups for NH 3 sorption [31]. Similar increases to NH 3 sorption have been reported by Chou et al and Ritz et al [42,43]. Such increases likely result from the formation of recoverable ammonium sulphate salts on adsorbent sites possibly following similar reactions to those outlined in Chou et al [42].…”

“…The essential aspect that impacts overall adsorption capacity is the biochar's specific properties, particularly large surface area (Linhoss et al 2019 ; Liu et al 2017a ). Biochar addition to the litter, on the other hand, may have little effect on the pen's environmental conditions, such as ammonia (Flores et al 2021 ; Ritz et al 2011 ). Increasing the amount of biochar in the litter, however, may increase nitrogen adsorption (Flores et al 2021 ).…”

“…Ritz et al [47] examining the effectiveness of the surface application of chars in limiting the volatilization of NH3 from poultry litter, showed that the addition of peanut hull chars did not lower the NH3 concentration in the air. Despite this, the authors obtained a positive result and a linear reduction in NH3 concentrations after the use of acidified chars, which was probably the result of a combination of lowering the pH of the litter and immobilization of NH3 by H2SO4 on the char [47]. After applying biochar to the litter, Flores et al [48] also found no differences in ammonia emissions from litter.…”
