Evaluation of the interrupter technique for measuring change in airway resistance in 5‐year‐old asthmatic children

Abstract: The interrupter technique is a noninvasive method for measuring airway resistance during quiet breathing which requires minimal subject cooperation. It, therefore, has enormous potential for use in young children unable to cooperate with conventional lung function tests. We evaluated the interrupter technique during bronchial challenge with methacholine administered by the tidal breathing method in 10 5-year-old asthmatic children. The mouth pressure/time [P mo(t)] curve obtained following brief airflow interr… Show more

“…With this technique, measurements of the resistance of the respiratory system (Rint) can be carried out quickly, with minimal cooperation of the child. Rint measurements have been shown to be reproducible [1,[4][5][6], sufficiently sensitive to detect (sub)clinical airway obstruction [6,7], and to correlate satisfactorily with measurements of airway resistance [4,8,9]. The technique can not only be used as a tool to screen for airway obstruction, but also to assess the responses to bronchodilating and bronchoconstricting agents [1,3,10].…”

“…Muchos estudios publicados se han realizado con muestras pequeñas (< 30 pacientes), 14,20,21 aunque existen algunos trabajos con poblaciones más numerosas. [4][5][6][7] Además, la mayoría de las publicaciones incluyeron a niños menores de 7 años.…”

“…The device estimates the Rint during exhalation using the two methods of analysis described by Phagoo. 20,21 In this study, the only method used was the linear back-extrapolation. Measurements were performed in the sports center (healthy subjects) and in the pulmonary function laboratory of the Pulmonology Division (subjects with a respiratory disease).…”
