Evaluation of the Polyphenol Composition and Antioxidant Activity of African Variety ofDacryodes edulis(G.Don) H.J Lam Fruit

Abstract: Polyphenols are abundant micronutrients in our diet that have been credited with chemoprevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated the whole ripened fruit of Dacryodes edulis (G.Don) H.J Lam, a multipurpose tree growing in West and Central Africa and other countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea, for polyphenol content as well as its antioxidant/radical scavenging capacity. Analysis of the methanol extract of the fruit by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled … Show more

“…Sun-dried food samples were acquired from retail outlet in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria in July, 2004. The samples were prepared, stored and extracted with methanol on Soxhlex apparatus following prior extraction with hexane as previously reported [ 5 , 6 ]. Extraction of the Canarium schweinfurthii Engl fruit oil was achieved by solvent-solvent extraction [ 7 ].…”

“…Thus, it has been recommended that adequate intake of antioxidant through the consumption of antioxidant rich foods can prevent the development of oxidative stress (Lako et al, 2008;Atawodi, 2012;Nisar et al, 2012). In furtherance of our earlier work on the antioxidant properties of Nigerian foodstuffs and herbs (Atawodi et al, 2009a;Atawodi et al, 2009b;Atawodi et al,2010a;Atawodi, 2010;Atawodi et al, 2011aAtawodi, 2011b, the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of dried seeds of Dioclea reflexa, popular as condiment in Eastern Nigeria was investigated in acute and chronic models of liver injury and oxidative stress.…”

“…In recent reports, some quercetin derivatives, well-known antioxidants, were identified and isolated from ladies finger (okra) [52]. Atawodi et al [53] have reported in vitro antioxidant assay of methanol extract of okra fruits. Ansari et al [54] reported okra extract as in vitro non-enzymatic inhibitor of lipid peroxidation in liposomes.…”
