Evaluation of the relationship between Orthopedic Foundation for Animals' hip joint scores and PennHIP distraction index values in dogs

Abstract: Dogs judged as phenotypically normal by the OFA harbored clinically important passive hip joint laxity as determined via distraction radiography. Results suggested that OFA scoring of HE radiographs underestimated susceptibility to osteoarthritis in dogs, which may impede progress in reducing or eliminating hip dysplasia through breeding.

“…Although useful, alternative data sources including referral practice data [51], [52], [53], pet insurance databases [27], official health schemes [54], [55], [56] and large scale questionnaire surveys [26], [57], [58], [59] are reported to suffer many limitations for the generation of prevalence values that can be generalised to the wider dog population. Analyses based on primary-care veterinary EPR data benefit from open-ended data collection allowing generation of stronger evidence from cohort compared with cross-sectional study designs [60], [61], [62].…”

“…It is an accurate predictor of the development of OA and is free of false positive and negative results. In contrast, the BVA/KC scheme is accurate in its assessment of poor hips but many dogs with good hip scores will have undetected hip laxity and will develop OA and should not have been used for breeding (Powers and others 2010). …”
