Evaluation of the Repeatability and Reproducibility of Corneal Epithelial Thickness Mapping for a 9-mm Zone Using Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the repeatability and between-machine/operator reproducibility of optical coherence tomography (RTVue-XR) for mapping corneal epithelial thickness (ET) and corneal thickness (CT) over a 9-mm zone. Methods: In 5 groups of eyes (normal, contact lens, dry eye, post-LASIK/PRK, and keratoconus), corneal ET and CT were evaluated in 25 areas in the following 4 regions: 1) 1 central zone within 0 to 2.0 mm diameter, 2) 8 paracentral zones f… Show more

“…In a recent study evaluating long-term efficacy of PTK in treating EBMD, Lee et al reported that painful erosions and visual disturbance associated with EBMD respond positively to PTK [31]. In addition, the proposed screening by AS-OCT provides a very simple, highly repeatable, quantitative and accurate procedure [13]. The findings reported herein may also be very useful to identify PTK candidates and for their post-operative follow-up.…”

“…OCT has been used in several studies to evaluate the corneal epithelial thickness in ocular diseases [12,13]. Li et al [19] and Sandali et al [34] mapped the corneal epithelial thickness with Fourier-domain OCT in keratoconic eyes: keratoconus was characterised by apical epithelial thinning.…”

“…Initially designed to characterize epithelial thickness in a 6-mm zone, a recent upgrade allows expansion up to 9 mm, equivalent to an area that is approximately two and a quarter times larger than the former. 2 Using a custom-designed polarization-sensitive OCT, Pircher and colleagues 3 were able to map the thickness of the Bowman’s layer in addition to the epithelium from limbus-to-limbus and noted a highly irregular “moth-like” damage pattern in the Bowman’s layer in keratoconic eyes. Another group employed a commercially available swept-source OCT and by postprocessing, delineation of the air–epithelium edge and epithelium–Bowman’s layer interface was made possible.…”

“…In addition, corneal SD-OCT can provide useful information for surgical and postoperative monitoring [6]. The RTVue-XR (Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA, USA) is a SD-OCT device that is routinely used in clinical practice, and capable of 9 mm wide cornea scans [7,8]. Using this device for CT and ET measurements, previous studies were able to show excellent reliability for central corneal measurements as well as the central 6-mm zone area in relatively small groups of healthy eyes [9 -11].…”
