“…Beyond vessel behaviour, POSEIDON spatially represents a coastline, ocean area, ports and fish biology. Fish biology can be represented as simply as with non‐age‐structured logistic growth models with diffusion among grid cells, or as complexly as full ecosystem models, such as OSMOSE (Grüss et al, ; Shin & Cury, , ). Although it is possible to tailor both fleet and biological components of POSEIDON to a specific fishery (Carrella et al, ), here we use a simple conceptual version simulating a hypothetical fishery with one port (Figures ), and one or more non‐interacting fish species having logistic growth (Schaefer, ).…”

“…In the simplest case we have small numbers of non-interacting fish species, with population density that grows locally (per spatial cell) according to a simple logistic model, and diffuses spatially according to the local gradient (following Soulié and Thébaud 2006;Cabral et al 2010). A significantly more sophisticated option for the biology is the OSMOSE model Cury 2001, 2004;Grüss et al 2015) a computational model of fish dynamics simulated at school level. All options are described fully in the ESM, and in examples shown in the main paper the logistic model is used throughout.…”

“…OSMOSE has often been coupled with lower trophic level systems based on satellite chlorophyll a (Grüss et al 2015) and biogeochemical models (Halouani et al 2016;Travers-Trolet et al 2014). Travers-Trolet et al (2014) investigated the effects of the combined pressures of fishing and climate forcing in the southern Benguela ecosystem using a hydrodynamic lower trophic level OSMOSE-coupled model.…”
