Evaluation of two different alternatives of energy recovery from municipal solid waste in Brazil

Abstract: Brazil has a large population with a high waste generation. The municipal solid waste (MSW) generated is deposited mainly in landfills. However, a considerable fraction of the waste is still improperly disposed of in dumpsters. In order to overcome this inadequate deposition, it is necessary to seek alternative routes. Between these alternatives, it is possible to quote gasification and incineration. The objective of this study is to compare, from an energetic and economic point of view, these technologies, ai… Show more

“…When the latter is not separated from the former, it may also get burnt and emanate harmful pollution that can hurt the people around. Many costeffective technologies that can be used to recover energy from waste and reduce pollution are available (Jimenez et al, 2017). However, developing countries like Indonesia may not have the financial capacity to afford those technologies (Bogner et al, 2007).…”

“…El aumento de la producción de residuos se asocia con el crecimiento de la población (Medina Jimenez et al, 2017). La producción de desechos en Medellín es de aproximadamente 1800 ton/día, con una tasa de generación per cápita de alrededor de 0.45 kg/habitante/día.…”

“…According to [12], the steam turbine isentropic efficiency range is 80-90%. Other sources [56], [25] assume 85% and 90%. Consulting Thermoflex ® library for an additional reference, it is found that the default ST "dry step efficiency" is 85%, however, it varies with the stage (ranging between 87.5-92.2% in the investigated cases) and being higher for LP than for HP.…”
