Evaluation of wind resource potential in mountainous region considering morphometric terrain characteristics

Abstract: In South Korea, where 64% of the national territory is mountainous, good wind resources in inland areas are mostly situated in high mountain regions. To develop a wind farm in a mountain region, the sloping of mountains and their shielding from wind by the surrounding topology should be considered. It is generally most advantageous to install wind turbines along a ridge that is open in all directions. This article presents a methodology for evaluating suitable sites for wind farm development by identifying sui… Show more

“…The relief of the eastern Korea mountainous Taebaeksan Range is a typical steep region that faces a number of landslide events [8586]. The topographical effect to climatic variables, especially wind speed, is clearly shown by classifying geomorphological characteristics into pass, peak, and ridge in Gangwon Province of the eastern Korea [87]. Rubel et al [16] also mentioned the possible existence of a source of uncertainty due to local effects, including the rain shadow, especially in the Alps region.…”

“…Tungurahua province is also located in this valley, spanning from the east to west range. The criteria established in order to place the meteorological tower included a socio economical constraint, that is proximity to remote communities as portrayed by EEASA (2014) and an orography constraint that is to favor local prominent locations (Kim et al, 2017).…”

“…Ahmed and Rao (2019) conducted a terrain assessment to evaluate watershed conditions in Tuirini River, India, while Colby and Dobson (2010) evaluated flood patterns to develop a hazard prevention plan. Kim et al (2017) conducted a terrain assessment to predict the wind flow in the montane area to identify a suitable spot for wind farm establishment. These studies emphasized that assessing terrain condition is crucial studying environmental phenomena, such as water flow and wind intensity, to evaluate and predict the land use potential.…”
