Evaluation on the antiviral activity of arctigenin against spring viraemia of carp virus

Abstract: A B S T R A C TSpring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) causes high morality in several economically important cyprinid fishes, but there is no approved therapy up to now. To address the urgent need for therapeutics to combat SVCV infection, we investigated the anti-SVCV activities of 12 natural compounds and 7 common antiviral agents using epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cells in this study. From the 19 compounds, we identified arctigenin (ARG) has the highest inhibition on SVCV replication, with maximum inhi… Show more

“…The rhizome of Arctium lappa is a kind of nutritious vegetable, and the seed has been traditionally used as herbal medicine. As we know, Arctigenin (ARG) (chemical structure shown in Figure 1A ) has been reported to be a bioactive lignan from Arctium lappa and demonstrated to be effective in numerous pharmacological activities, including anti-cancer (Lu et al, 2015; Lee et al, 2017), immune-regulation (Lu et al, 2018), cardiovascular protection (Liu et al, 2015b; Daci et al, 2017), and anti-viral (Shen et al, 2018). We have previously proved that ARG could induce apoptosis in HCC including Hep G2 and SMMC7721 cells with mild cytotoxicity in normal hepatic cells (Lu et al, 2015).…”

“…Our recent studies reported that four synthesized coumarins inhibited SVCV with IC 50 2,2, 3.2, 0.6 and 2.4 mg/L Chen et al, 2018b;Shen et al, 2018b). In addition, arctigenin (IC 50 = 0.29 mg/L) and its two derivatives (IC 50 = 0.08 and 0.10 mg/L) were found with anti-SVCV activities Shen et al, 2018a). As natural products, bavachin and saikosaponin D showed efficient inhibition on SVCV infection with IC 50 0.46 and 0.21 mg/L Shen et al, 2019).…”

“…The results above indicated that SVCV replication could be significantly inhibited by Ani treatment in vitro. (Liu et al, 2018;Shen et al, 2018a, b;Shen et al, 2019). The results in Fig.…”

“…The dry seed of Arctium lappa L., which is rich in lignin compounds including arctiin and arctigenin (ARG), has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases . Numerous studies have shown that ARG exerts strong biological activity including immune modulatory, anti‐inflammatory, antiviral and antitumour . Previously, we revealed that ARG exerted an antiproliferative effect on the human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with little effect on liver cells.…”
