Evaluations of the sixth phase of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project model performance on precipitation over Southeast Asia based on the moisture budget

Abstract: This study evaluated the performance of the climatological precipitation over Southeast Asia using an ensemble of 48 global climate models/earth system models from the sixth phase of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) suite of experiments. Multi‐source observational data sets were used to evaluate the historical simulation data of the CMIP6 ensembles towards the semi‐year mean of precipitation during November–April (NDJFMA) and May–October (MJJASO). The results indicate that the CMIP6 models were ab… Show more

“…To examine differences in the regional moisture budget, moisture convergence and fluxes are calculated using ERA5 and model ensemble means. Moisture budgets can effectively delineate small-to-large dynamical sources and sinks of moisture globally (Trenberth and Guillemot 1995;Seager et al 2010) and regionally (Huang et al 2005;Jin and Zangvil 2010;Pomposi et al 2015;M19;M20;Herrera et al, 2020a, Liu et al 2022. Models are regridded and interpolated to a 1.0°x1.0° horizontal grid and 17 pressure level grid, respectively.…”
