Evaporation in a Mediterranean environment by energy budget and Penman methods, Lake Baratz, Sardinia, Italy

Abstract: Abstract. In Mediterranean environments, evaporation is a key component of lake water budgets. This applies to Lake Baratz in Sardinia, Italy, a closed lake that almost dried up in 2008 after a succession of years with low seasonal rainfall. We used the energy budget method and Penman's equation to estimate evaporation over Lake Baratz. We measured, using a raft station, water temperature at the surface, at 1, 2, 4, 6 m depth and at the bottom of the lake, as well as air temperature, relative humidity, wind sp… Show more

“…The other approaches are developed for longer time intervals and are not applicable for sub-daily calculations. The results also confirm the findings from various other studies (Rimmer et al, 2009;Giadrossich et al, 2015;Tanny et al, 2008;Rosenberry et al, 2007) that for the BREB, Priestley-Taylor, and Penman method, the knowledge of the heat storage term is essential to achieve reliable results, as neglecting the heat storage results in a strong seasonal bias. Using estimates of the heat storage term does not provide acceptable results for the BREB or for the Priestley-Taylor method.…”

“…The main goal is the identification of the best fitting equation, by using measurements purely made on land, as data from raft stations or buoys are often difficult to obtain (Giadrossich et al, 2015). The calculated evaporation rates are compared to the eddy covariance measurements and evaluated in terms of their correlation coefficient, slope and offset of the regression line, mean difference, and monthly differences between the estimates and the measurements.…”

“…The study was performed in the Baratz Lake catchment (Giadrossich et al, 2015;Niedda et al, 2014;Pirastru and Niedda, 2013), in North-West Sardinia, Italy. The climate is semiarid Mediterranean, with a mild winter, a warm summer and a high water deficit between April and September.…”

“…In some climates where changes in lake water temperature are small, Q x may be ignored if the period over which evaporation is determined is suitable long. However, even when determining evaporation on a monthly or seasonal scale, Q x usually is an important factor and cannot be ignored (Giadrossich et al, ; Lenters et al, ). One can readily observe from Equation that for a given Δ T , Q x will increase as Δ t decreases.…”
