The aim of this study was to describe the evidence-based practice (EBP) attributes among California nurse leaders who are members of a professional nursing organization. BACKGROUND: Nurse leaders are pivotal for successful EBP implementation. The Association of California Nurse Leaders' (ACNL) mission to equip nurses to lead self, others, and systems propelled them to conduct a study of members' EBP beliefs, knowledge, competencies, and implementation. METHODS: Evidence-based practice attributes of California nurse leaders were measured using valid and reliable scales via an anonymous, electronic survey. RESULTS: Although ahead in the subjective EBP scales, California nurse leaders' perceptions of organizational EBP culture were comparable with those of a similar national sample. Scores still indicated opportunities for improvement.

Evidence-based healthcare (EBHC) has been recognised worldwide as important for the quality of social and healthcare services and patient care. It improves patient/client safety and decreases the variability of care, adverse events, and healthcare costs (Rudman et al., 2020). Also, the World Health Organization (WHO) has assumed that healthcare services and practices should be based on the best available evidence (WHO, 2017). Therefore, the WHO produces, for example, evidence-based guidelines and recommendations for informing global healthcare policy and practices (WHO, 2014). Systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical guidelines represent the best evidence, which is a prerequisite for the implementation of EBHC (WHO, 2017).

Transitioning from Heparin to Saline Locks for Central Venous Access Devices in Oncology: An Evidence-Based Practice Approach

Central vascular access devices (CVADs) are often essential to the care of patients undergoing long-term cancer treatment. CVAD maintenance is an essential oncology nurse competency. Evidence-based practice (EBP) in flushing and locking help to prevent intraluminal occlusion, a common complication. Heparinized saline (HS) has been the standard locking solution for CVADs. However, research indicates no superiority of HS over normal saline (NS). The objectives of this EBP project were 1) to evaluate whether a significant difference in intraluminal occlusion was associated with the change from HS to NS use for locking CVADs in ambulatory oncology care, and 2) to evaluate the effects of peer nurse mentoring on nurses’ and patients’ perspectives about the practice change. Analysis of data revealed decreases in alteplase usage after transitioning to NS locking. Patient and nurse surveys indicated that peer nurse mentoring increased nurse and patient confidence and competence in making the practice transition.
