Evidence for Production of Single Top Quarks and First Direct Measurement of|Vtb|

Abstract: The D0 Collaboration presents first evidence for the production of single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider. Using a 0.9 fb −1 dataset, we apply a multivariate analysis to separate signal from background and measure σ(pp → tb + X, tqb + X) = 4.9 ± 1.4 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 0.035%, corresponding to a 3.4 standard deviation significance. We use the cross section measurement to directly determine the CKM matrix element that… Show more

“…They are derived such that the total number of predicted events match data before any b tagging selection is applied. These scale factors hence fulfill the relation: 4) where N data are the number of events in data, Y W +jets and Y multijets are the sum of weights for all events in the W +jets and mulitjet samples, and Y all other MC are the predicted number of events for the remaining signal and background samples normalized as described in Section 5.4.5. Notice, that since all terms but S W +jets and S multijets are known in Equation 5.4, these factors are anticorrelated, and we only have one unknown parameter.…”
