Evidence on Self-Fitting Hearing Aids

Abstract: The research on self-fitting hearing aids is reviewed using evidence-based principles. The evaluation begins with a definition of the research questions followed by a detailed search of the literature and then a review of the relevant studies. Four features of self-fitting hearing aids are reviewed: in-situ threshold measurement, whether an initial fitting prescribed using standard prescription formulae will approximate user preferences, outcomes with training of hearing aids for preferred responses, and assem… Show more

“…In those envi ronments, in-situ audiometry may offer cost-and time saving potential (O'Brien et al, 2010;Keidser et al, 2011;Nesgaard Pedersen, 2011). In-situ audiometry has also been suggested for self-fitting hearings aids (Convery et al, 2011;Wong, 2011). When thresholds are measured through the earmold that will be used for the final fitting, in-situ audiometry can take the effects of the individual acoustic coupling into account, such as venting, residual ear canal volume, insertion loss, and middle ear impedance (Ludvigsen and Topholm, 1997;Ludvigsen and Kuk, 2001).…”

“…Research on self-fitting has generally followed the clinical pattern of threshold-based prescription followed by finetuning (Convery, Keidser, Seeto, Yeend, & Freeston, 2015;Keidser & Convery, 2016;Keidser, Dillon, Zhou, & Carter, 2011;Keissling et al, 2015;Wong, 2012). In the present study, however, we bypassed individual prescription and gave participants the opportunity to make changes from a generic starting condition.…”
