Abstract: Overall and for the first time, smoking prevalence in health workers begins to decrease. However, it does not decrease in the same way among all types of healthcare workers and the prevalence remains high when compared with the population prevalence. This consumption reduction coincides with the measures introduced by the program after the legislative changes.

“…It found that the rate of tobacco use among the physicians at these hospitals was 52.2% [12]. It may be deduced by comparing the data from our study to the data from a study by Reyes Urueña et al [8] that a reduction in the prevalence of tobacco use among Spanish health professionals started to become evident from the time the Spanish legislation regulating tobacco use was implemented [9,10,13]. …”

“…A recent study analysed how the rate of tobacco use in a group of workers at two Catalan hospitals evolved from 2001 to 2011. The study found that the smoking rates in physicians decreased from 25.9% in 2001 to 18.8% in 2011 (p = 0.005) and the smoking rates in nurses decreased from 35.1 to 25.6% (p = 0.005) [8]. There may be several explanations for this significant reduction: greater awareness and improved knowledge about this subject.…”

“…Various Spanish authors have evaluated tobacco consumption amongst PHC personnel and their attitude towards its treatment [15][16][18][19][20][21][22][23] . For example, in 1997 prevalence was found to be 38.1% decreasing to 28.7% by 2008 18,23 .…”

For example, in 1997 prevalence was found to be 38.1% decreasing to 28.7% by 2008 18,23 . A later study in 2015, which included 612 PHC personnel (155 physicians), observed a prevalence of 11.7% (8.9% and 11.2% for physicians and nurses, respectively), although it might not have been possible to accurately distinguish the different groups 16 .…”
