The paper presents a prototype Head Up Display interface which acts as an interactive infotainment system for rear seat younger passengers, aiming to minimize driver distraction. The interface employs an Augmented Reality medium that utilizes the external scenery as a background for two platform games explicitly designed for this system. Additionally, the system provides AR embedded information on major en route landmarks, navigational data, and local news amongst other infotainment options. The proposed design is applied in the peripheral windscreens with the use of a novel Head-Up Display system.The system evaluation by twenty users offered promising results discussed in the paper.

Long distance travelling and commuting can be particularly tiring for the driver and the rear passengers. The level of driver distraction could be further increased if younger passengers onboard are idle for long time during the drive. This paper presents a novel Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Up Display (HUD) interface that aims to attract rear passengers' attention through assortment of infotainment applications superimposed on the side car-windows. The system additionally offers a bespoke provision of educational value, which provides superimposed data and games available for the different landmarks. The simplified interface enables the use from younger passengers and seniors alike. The proposed system has undergone two main evaluations involving 50 users and 10 families aiming to identify the system usability. The evaluation took place in a full-scale Virtual Reality driving simulator, which tested the drivers/parents' ability to avoid collisions. The evaluation outcome offered an informative appraisal of the systems efficiency and overall positive feedback from the users.

The rapid mobilization of Emergency Services (ES) could be particularly challenging for ES drivers and staff that have to navigate and manoeuvre through various traffic and weather conditions. Driving, in high speeds through dense traffic is a particularly demanding psychomotor task for the ES drivers and could result in collisions and even fatalities. Current attempts to support the driver and reduce the potential driving hazards had limited success. The paper presents the design rationale of a prototype system that utilises Augmented Reality (AR) in the form of a Head-Up Display (HUD) to superimpose guidance information in the real-life environment. The paper will discuss also the requirements for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that could analyse the driving conditions and present the best manoeuvring options whilst maintain the road users' safety. Finally, the paper presents the requirements' framework for the development of the proposed AR/AI system based on the feedback and suggestions of ten ES drivers. Their feedback will be presented and discussed in detail as it provided essential insight into the everyday challenges of ES operations.
