Evolution of Knowledge, Awareness, and Practices regarding Zika Virus from 2016 to 2017

Abstract: Objective Our team created a knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) survey in order to assess changes over time in healthcare provider and community member awareness of Zika virus symptoms, transmission, treatment, and current and future concerns. Study Design The cross-sectional survey was issued at an academic medical center in Washington, DC, and via an online link to healthcare providers and community members between June and August 2016. Survey distribution was then repeated the following year, from Mar… Show more

“…Only 8% of the respondents identified sexual intercourse as a mode of transmission of ZIKV compared to 34.6% to 59% of respondents in other studies [15, 16, 19, 30] but consistent with a study finding among Ecuadorian adults [31]. This is supported by the findings where only 10% of the respondents said that condom use and abstinence were measures which could prevent ZIKV transmission.…”

“…In the absence of effective drugs and vaccine against Zika, regular cleaning of water containers to prevent breeding of mosquito vector is critical in preventing disease outbreaks. This practice of cleaning water containers is much lower compared to a community in Washington, USA whose residents are more aware and have a better Zika-preventive practice [16]. This finding is worrisome since open water containers and stagnant water sources are potential mosquito breeding sites which can give rise to vector-borne epidemics such as ZVD.…”

“…The women who are educated and employed might have received more opportunities for seeking and obtaining information about Zika virus infection with targeted campaigns through healthcare providers and through online resources and digital outreach. Their accessibility to internet and healthcare providers has served as effective avenues for disseminating knowledge about Zika virus infection (33).…”

“…7 Also, the incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome is 2.0 to 9.8 times higher during the Zika transmission period, when compared with the baseline level in Latin American countries. 8 Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) surveys on Zika virus infections have been conducted among the general public, [9][10][11][12][13] pregnant women, 9,14 and health care providers. 15,16 In particular, there was inconclusive evidence on the knowledge level of Zika virus infection among the general public.…”
