Evolution of Shale Microstructure under in Situ Heat Treatment: Synchrotron Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

Abstract: Shale gas reservoirs are characterized by low porosity and low permeability which inhibits their large-scale commercial development. This has fueled research into the enhancement of gas recovery from shale reservoirs. In this study, a new method of increasing gas production by heating is proposed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to analyze the mass loss curve and enthalpy change of shale during heating. The phase state changes of mineral composition during… Show more

“…Moreover, various synchronous X-ray imaging studies have been developed, providing a lot of insights into the chemical information, multidimensional morphology and surface/bulk structure of electrode materials for batteries, according to different imaging principles. [125][126][127][128][129] As shown in Fig. 17, from 1995 to 2021, publications and related citations increased year by year, which demonstrates that synchrotron-based material characterization technology for batteries has been attracting increasing attention.…”

“…The second review by Zhang and Cheng is a mini review on the technical aspects of sample preparation and data analysis using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and ultrasmall-angle neutron scattering (USANS) for shale samples. The original research articles cover a wide spectrum of research on shale gas, including reservoir characteristics, ,,, reservoir modeling, ,,, exploration, equipment-related, ,, gas transport properties, ,,,, shale property characterization, , gas adsorption, ,, gas generation, produced water treatment, , methane conversion, etc.…”

“…Thermal maturation of organic-rich shale has been extensively studied in the conditions of N 2 , 49–65 steam, 18,19,66–69 subcritical water, 20,21,70–74 carbon dioxide, and other solvents. 37,75–84 Kerogen undergoes two parallel paths in thermal conversion, that are, a direct decomposition to oil and gas, and a successive pathway with macromolecular bitumen or heavy oil as an intermediate.…”
