Evolutionary Approach to Development of Collaborative Teleconsultation System for Imaging Medicine

Abstract: This paper presents an evolution of a modern collaborative teleconsultation system called TeleDICOM over the period of several years. We show how new features (required from a medical point of view) can be provided, which barriers have been identified, and how these factors influence the system's architecture. A turning point in the evolution of our system was the formulation of a new architecture, fully facilitating service-oriented architecture paradigm guidelines. We therefore show how the knowledge and exp… Show more

“…A comparison of some teleconsultation systems, including DiViSy, DoctorPro, e-Consultant, Teleradiology.com, MedVizer, TeleConsult, Konsul are in [63]. A new prototype, namely TeleDI-COM, introduces new essential features, like multipoint-to-multipoint communication -although a very good bandwidth is required.…”

“…We assume that the imaging data is transferred prior to a scheduled meeting and, therefore, all necessary data is already present once the session commences (which is typical for teleconsultation systems operating with large datasets [4]). The compression stage is intended to be run after the data transfer and before the start of the session and, therefore, can be treated as part of the session initialization.…”

“…Applications of the Internet include telemedicine, which has become a very broad term, encompassing many remotely performed processes in medicine, given as follows [2]: -Telemonitoring of patients' vital parameters (physical activity, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, etc.). If there is feedback on the basis of the parameters gathered, the term telecare is more suitable.…”

“…The record of the consultation session can be used not only for evidence but also as educational material for other doctors or students. Currently, a second version of the system, TeleDICOM II [2], is being developed, focusing on further improvements to doctors' cooperation and providing flexible and extensible architecture.…”
