Evolutionary Concept Analysis of Reproductive Life Planning

Abstract: Reproductive life planning is recommended as an important topic of discussion at every health care interaction with women and men of reproductive age; however, this intervention has not been well studied. Therefore, the purpose of this evolutionary concept analysis was to synthesize the relevant literature, identify the essential attributes of the concept, and develop a conceptual definition to guide future research and to help implement reproductive life planning in routine health care practice.

“…Although the prevalence of RC among Latina women is well documented, qualitative data on specific experiences of RC, safety and harm reduction strategies, and care‐seeking patterns is needed to provide practitioners with concrete guidance on how best to support women's reproductive life plans and to address RC. This qualitative exploratory study focuses on listening to the experiences of Latina women seeking services at an urban clinic to offer women's insights on improving recognition of and support for women experiencing RC.…”

“…A Reproductive Life Plan (RLP) reflects an individual's pregnancy intentions in the context of their personal values and life goals [1][2][3]. In 2006, Merry K. Moos suggested a set of questions that healthcare providers could ask individuals or couples to make them reflect on their pregnancy intentions and create a plan (Box 1) [3,4].…”

“…The healthcare providers using the RLP have generally been nursemidwives or general practitioners [19,[21][22][23][24][25][26], and the use of it among community health workers has not yet been studied. Further, research on the implementation of reproductive life planning is lacking [2,3,19]. Implementing effective reproductive health tools used by community health workers could have a significant impact in settings where resources are limited and unplanned pregnancies are common.…”

“…The concept of BSR is closely related to reproductive life planning (RLP), a mandated policy for Title X clinics that was initiated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Edmonds & Ayres, 2017). The impetus of RLP is to structure sexual and reproductive decision making around personal values and goals as a means to decrease the rate of unintended pregnancies and promote the health of women and children.…”

“…There are also additional positive consequences beyond protection from biological risk for both RLP and BSR such as empowerment, self-fulfillment, and life satisfaction (Edmonds & Ayres, 2017;Loew et al, n.d.). Integrating the principles of RLP and BSR may create a new, woman-centered approach, that encourages women to be advocates for their own sexual health which could improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes.…”
