Examining Economic Development and Carbon Emissions in China’s Low-Carbon Pilot Provinces

Abstract: Global warming imperils human survival and development, and carbon emissions from human activities are the main cause of global warming [1]. As the world's largest developing country and a fast-growing economy, China leads the globe in carbon emissions, and its government has promised to cut carbon emission intensity to 40% to 45% of 2005 levels by 2020. Toward this end, it formulated a low-carbon development plan in which low-carbon pilot projects are a key element. Without constraints provided by specialised… Show more

“…The six central provinces share similar conditions of economy and population, and their average decoupling index shows little diverseness. However, Shanxi Province has the highest decoupling index, mainly because Shanxi, as an energy-based province and major coal producer, has a slow rate of economic growth and a strong dependence on energy, and is still at the exploration stage of energy transformation [ 37 ]. From 2017 to 2019, Henan Province was in a strong decoupling state.…”

“…The major indicators of environmental damage are climate change and global warming, both of which are caused by emissions of carbon dioxide [7]. CO2 causes a rise in both the greenhouse effect and the average temperature [8]. Seventyfive percent of the world's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are carbon dioxide The data that links economic growth with environmental damage is inconsistent, according to a number of studies.…”

“…"Decarbonization" refers to a decreasing energy intensity of economic activities, determined by CO 2 emissions per GDP unit [19]. Decoupling concepts vary also in the sectoral base and were applied, e.g., for decoupling of GDP from traffic volume and CO 2 emissions from transport [19], decoupling of carbon dioxide emissions per capita from income per capita in developed countries, decoupling of GHG emissions and economic growth [8,20,21], etc.…”
