Examining unidimensionality and improving reliability for the eight subscales of the SF-36 in opioid-dependent patients using Rasch analysis

Abstract: The remaining 32 items of the SF-36 are appropriate for evaluating the HRQOL in opioid-dependent patients in terms of unidimensionality. Additionally, the test scores produced by the multidimensional approach were more accurate than those obtained by the unidimensional approach.

“…29-31 Lu et al found that the ODI is a unidimentional instrument in a heterogeneous population of patients with back pain. 29 The outfit statistics of 0.55 to 1.26 presented in that study are similar to the performance of the ODI in our population.…”

“…However, in terms of the step parameter, step disorders were observed in 19 out of 34 items. This might be a result of the small sample size, and in fact, a sample size larger than 250 was suggested to ensure an adequate and stable estimation of parameters for Rasch analysis [ 50 , 51 ]. Furthermore, this might be related to the relatively good HIV-related condition of the study participants, as evidenced by their CD4 cell counts and viral load status, as well as their scores on K-MOS-HIV.…”

“…The SF-36 is now widely used for both research and clinical purposes and has undergone rigorous psychometric evaluation nationally and internationally using Classic Test Theory (CTT) [ 6 , 7 , 9 , 10 ]. CTT seeks to determine the reliability of a whole instrument through evaluating the degree of variance in terms of the ratio between true and observed scores.…”

“…IRT-based evaluation of the SF-36 has overwhelmingly focused on individual scales, particularly the Physical Functioning-10 subscale, with only some studies having examined particular psychometric properties of the SF-36 as a whole instrument or by component summary scores [ 5 , 6 , 12 , 16 , 17 ].…”
