Excavating Anticonvulsant Compounds from Prescriptions of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Epilepsy

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history and been widely used in prevention and treatment of epilepsy in China. This paper is intended to review the advances in the active anticonvulsant compounds isolated from herbs in the prescription of TCM in the treatment of epilepsy. These compounds were introduced with the details including classification, CAS number specific structure and druggability data. Meanwhile, much of the research in these compounds in the last two decades has shown that they exhib… Show more

“…Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder syndrome identified by the spontaneous recurrence of seizures which can disrupt periods of more or less normal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and behavior [66]. Currently the anticonvulsant drugs are chiefly derived from benzodiazepines or GABA (g-aminobutyric acid) analogues, pyrazolone derivatives are likely to provide a novel orientation for drug design.…”

“…1 H-NMR (600 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ: 6.17, 1.49, 1.18, 0.81. The Rf value was consistent with the standard product; based on the spectral data analysis, the structure of compound 3 was identified as 5-pentadecylresorcinol ( Zhao et al, 2018 ; Supplementary Figures 6 , 7 ).…”

“…TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), a cluster of time-honored herb medicine, has attracted much attention in developing new drugs. Our research group has made unremitting effort to seek promising lead compounds from TCM, not only TMCA from P. tenuifolia, but also a-asarone from Acorus gramineus, salvianic acid A from Salvia miltiorrhiza and vanillyl alcohol from Gastrodia elata have been absorbed into the investigation [12,13]. Combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine Chemistry, CTCMC, is our main drug design strategy ( Fig.…”
